The Weight of Blue Air
The salt smell hits the throat. We are on the coastal road, the light a bruised purple just before sunrise. I unfold the map; it is yellowed paper, folded into a sharp, perfect bird. The stranger stands across the asphalt, wearing a grey tweed coat. His eyes catch the half-light, the recognition starts at the corner of his mouth, then tracks up to his forehead. The ceiling, above the parked blue Ford, holds a small, silent weather system—a perfect miniature cumulonimbus. It pulses, deep and wet, casting a momentary shadow across the car’s roof. I lift my arm, fingers trailing the cold metal of the map. The bird shape catches the light.
