The Salt-Kissed Telephone

The yellow rotary telephone sits off the hook, its coiled cord smelling of ozone and salt. We stand on the coastal road where the gravel turns wet underfoot, the sky a bruised, pale violet before the sun rises. The ocean sound carries up a steady rhythm, a weight against the chest. I call a name, but the syllables detach before they reach the air, dissolving into the tide's white wash. The name unravels, a thread dissolving in water. The road curves into a stretch of scrub brush where the sand has the color of old butter. I press my hand against the cold yellow plastic of the receiver. Someone waits for a reply that never solidifies, a longing for a kitchen I recognize only from a postcard. The damp air carries the smell of cut kelp and gasoline.
