The Platform of Departures

The Departures board lists trains that left in 1978. A man in a grey wool coat stands five feet past the yellow line. My hand registers the weight of your hand. We stand still. The station air smells of hot oil and wet granite. I look down. The photograph taped to the pillar shows my collarbone. The print is fading; the edges lift. You are standing next to me, but only your shoulders occupy the space. A woman passes, wearing a blue uniform, and she does not look at the board. She walks into the glass wall where the ticket counter should be. The weight remains.
